AI for Liver Cancer Detection

Early Cancer Detection in the Liver of Filipinos with Chronic Hepatitis B Using AI-Driven Integration of Clinical and Genomic Biomarkers

The general objective of this project is to utilize the recent progress in omics research and leverage on AI capabilities to develop the Computational Omic Analysis Tool (COAT), an AI-driven computational tool that can ingest massive genomic data, ultrasound images, serum biomarkers and other clinical information. Based on the nature of the data predictors, various AI algorithms will be developed to establish correlation between each data type and the propensity of the patient to develop liver cancer.

Furthermore, these predictive models will be combined to come up with a comprehensive and integrated model that can be used by the clinicians to quantify the risks of patients to develop liver cancer. Because COAT is an automated platform that can be deployed to various hospitals and can be integrated to mobile applications, it will accelerate disease diagnosis and lead to better patient monitoring. Ultimately, the information that will be derived from COAT will provide healthcare professionals actionable insights to manage disease risks, improve diagnosis and plan appropriate interventions for a healthier population.

Direct beneficiaries are patients with chronic active hepatitis who are at high risk for developing liver cancer. Clinicians taking care of these patients will also benefit from having a reliable scoring system that will enable them to decide on how often diagnostic tests should be done, thus maximizing use of the limited funds of their patients, while maintaining good clinical practice. All Filipinos will also benefit because our unique genomic characteristics will be identified and documented and used for better healthcare.
